What does Potential Spam mean on your phone?
Potential Spam means your carrier thinks the caller rings lots of people it doesn't know, like a telemarketer working down a list. T-Mobile and Verizon both put it on spam calls, based on calling patterns and customer reports.
Scam Likely vs. Spam Risk: a fraud warning and a spam warning
What is Scam Likely? It's T-Mobile's warning for a likely scam, a step above its Potential Spam label, so treat a Scam Likely number as the stronger warning. Spam Risk means AT&T rates the call as unwanted, and its likely-scam label is Fraud Risk.

Invalid number
It fits no range in the country's numbering plan. If you typed it right, with the country code, the caller ID may be faked. You can validate a phone number to see why it fails.
Premium-rate range
Premium rate numbers, such as 900 in the US or 09 in the UK, add high charges to your bill when you call back.
Unexpected foreign range
Some +1 numbers that look domestic ring in the Caribbean, such as Jamaica or the Dominican Republic.
VoIP line
Easy to get and drop, though honest firms use them too. UK VoIP ranges start 056; US numbers carry no such mark. You can also find the network a number was issued to.
Country doesn't fit the story
A caller claiming to be your local bank shouldn't be on a foreign number. You can see where a phone number is from.
Middle of the night in the number's region
If it's 3 a.m. where the number was issued, a business call is unlikely. Shown when the number maps to a single local time.
Caller ID spoofing puts a fake number on your screen
Caller ID spoofing sends a false number to your screen, often a local one or a trusted company's. US rules ban it when meant to defraud, cause harm or wrongly get anything of value.
A clean check doesn't clear the call
A spoofed number may be a real, valid line, so it can show zero red flags. Neighbor spoofing shows a local-looking number, sometimes with your own area code and exchange. You often can't tell if a number is spoofed, so hang up and call the company on a number from its website.
What happens if you answer a spam call?
Should I answer potential spam calls? You don't have to, and picking up tells the caller your line is live; the FTC warns that pressing a key can bring more robocalls.

To block Scam Likely calls, T-Mobile and Metro users dial #662# to turn on Scam Block. On AT&T and Verizon, send Spam Risk or Potential Spam calls to voicemail in ActiveArmor or Call Filter, then report spam calls using the table below.

I got a missed call from an unknown number. Should I call back?
Not unless you expected a call. A missed call from an unknown number is common bait in callback scams, especially from abroad. Check the number at the top first. Callers who really need you usually leave a message or send a text.
What is a one-ring scam?
A one-ring scam is a call that rings once and stops so you'll call back. The number is usually abroad or premium rate, so a callback can cost a connection fee plus per-minute charges, and the scammer gets a share. It's also called the wangiri scam, Japanese for "one ring and cut". Don't call back.
What is the 'wrong number' text scam?
It's a scam that opens with a friendly text sent to the wrong person on purpose, such as a coffee invite. Reply and the sender keeps chatting, often turns romantic, then pitches an investment or crypto scheme. The FTC says not to reply, since any reply confirms your number works. Forward it to 7726, then delete it.
What does 'Unknown Caller' mean, and can I look it up?
It means your phone got no caller ID from the network, which can happen with some international, business or internet calls. No Caller ID or Private means the caller hid the number on purpose. Either way there's nothing to look up, and a caller who needs you can leave a message.
Can this site tell me if a number was reported as spam?
No. We keep no spam-report database or crowd ratings. The big US carriers don't offer a free scam phone number lookup either. T-Mobile Scam Shield, Verizon Call Filter and AT&T ActiveArmor flag and block risky calls for free as they ring, but looking up a number by hand is part of their paid tiers. Our check reads the number itself, and a clean result doesn't clear a call.
How do I stop spam calls for good?
You can't stop every one, but you can cut them down. Turn on your carrier's blocking and your phone's spam filter, and join your country's do-not-call list. Autodialers call numbers in bulk, which is why you may be getting so many spam calls. Every answer, key press or reply shows your line is live.
Which area codes are known for scams?
The scam area codes the FTC has named are +1 codes that look domestic but ring in the Caribbean, such as 268 (Antigua and Barbuda), 473 (Grenada), 809 (Dominican Republic) and 876 (Jamaica). Calls to 900 numbers carry extra charges, which puts 900 on the list of area codes to avoid too. No area code proves a scam on its own.
